8tracks: Summer 2012 Mix, Part 1

This playlist started out as just another monthly GTI mix on 8tracks (for June), but of course I waited too long and now it's July.  Hence the shift to a more seasonal title.  Just in time for summer, there's a strong influence of straight-up rock & roll, especially with the Struts, the Mynabirds, Purling Hiss, and Burning Jet Black.  Mixed in with that are a bunch of new singles released in June, as well as a great song from last year (Vandaveer's "Concerning Past and Future Conquests").  Expect to see a feature very soon for Stone Cold Fox (whose EP I can't stop playing).  Finally, rounding out the mix are the Rocketboys, a band I've been meaning to write about, and the Walkmen, whom I cannot say enough about.  Overall, I think this is a fitting soundtrack to the early summer of 2012.

Purling Hiss, “Lolita”

Philadelphia's Purling Hiss recorded a new song, "Lolita," for the May edition of Shaking Through, the partnership between Weathervane Music and XPN that supports independent artists by giving them an opportunity to record new music in a professional studio.  This session was curated by Adam Granduciel (of The War on Drugs), whose task was to make the band's "massive size translate really well into a super powerful final mix."  "Lolita" is a loud, confident, and in-your-face wall of noisy classic rock riffage.  Check it out:

Listen to Granduciel talk about "the Hiss," and his role as producer/curator for a band that hadn't really recorded in a studio before:
